Turtle Camp Activities

Day 1 (Arrival Akumal Mexico)
Upon arrival in Cancun México, your expedition leader will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your lodge, VILLAS DEROSA RESORT, Aventuras Akumal. This is a small resort located on the second most populated turtle laying beach in the Yucatan Peninsula. After check in, you may relax and lay in a hammock or on your verandah with sweeping ocean views. This evening we will have an orientation/welcome dinner at 7:00 PM.


Day 2 (Turtle study / introduction to the hatchery / bays by boat)
Turtle Camp will start with an introduction of Team Leaders and Biologists, followed by Turtle Appreciation presented by our team of Biologists.

You can all become Turtle Conservationists and play key roles within the hatchery on-site.

After you have seen the hatchery you can visit each of the 3 bays in Akumal by boat whilst looking for turtles along the way…

In the evening observe the turtles laying on the beach in front of your rooms and along this coast of Aventuras Akumal.


Day 3 (Xcacel and Xcacelito)
After breakfast you will have a role in the hatchery during your two hour turtle appreciation.

After the serious part, students can relax at Xcacel-Xcalelito beach, commonly known in this area as Turtle beach.

Turtle beach is the most important nesting beach for Loggerhead and Atlantic Green turtles in the Yucatan Peninsula.  

Plans to build an all inclusive hotel at this location where prevented by S.A.V.E, making legal history in Mexico 1999 .

After a relaxing afternoon, you must return back to camp to observe turtles during night watch.


Day 4 (Snorkel and photography)
After a group breakfast and turtle appreciation, You will head for the water armed with snorkel equipment and a underwater camera.

You will visit 3 locations a Tropical lagoon, Turtle Bay, and Nohoch Cenote.

After an action packed day you can wind down as the mother turtles lay in front of you.


Day 5   (Biosphere)
After Hatchery Management and Turtle Appreciation, the group will visit Sian Ka'an Biosphere a 1.3 million acre park set up in 1986 to preserve tropical forests,   mangroves, savannas, cenotes, coral reefs and Mayan Ruins.

When you return to Villas DeRosa Night Watch will be carried out.


Day 6 (Complete camp books and day trip)
On the sixth day participants should finish log and work books.  

When completed the group can choose to visit the Ancient Mayan Ruins in Tulum or for the more adventurous, a jungle cable slide into a Cenote.

On your return to Villas DeRosa a presentation will be made to all Hatchery Helpers and students who have completed the camp.

Followed by a Turtle Camp Party in the Rooftop restaurant and bar at the Hotel.


Day 7 (Back home)
Cancun Airport trips will be running from the hotel
